JULY 2015 - APRIL 2019

SKETCHBOOK ART

This sketchbook chronicles several years of Pride events, as well as international travels.  Pride events from summer 2015 to summer 2018 are creatively featured.  My involvement included entertaining as a drag performer, events host and drag queen story time reader in Vancouver, Richmond and New Westminster, British Columbia.  This is a celebration of LGBTQ+ pride and queer life.  My watercolour portraits of other Vancouver drag performers are also featured in this book.

Pride events are followed by travel journaling and photography.  Three separate  adventures to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico are chronicled in this book; December 2015, December 2016 and March 2017 (when I also visited San Francisco).

When I travel, I always learn directly from local artists for inspiration and cultural understanding.  Local colours, patterns and symbolism are celebrated and intertwined with my photography.  I learned from local artists at galleries and cultural events.  Travel guides at historical sites, temples and religious monuments shared a wealth of information and inspired my deep appreciation.

Midway through this volume features art inspired by my journeys through Hong Kong, Thailand (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai) and north-western Laos in December 2018.  This sketchbook concludes with an adventure to Cambodia in December 2019.  My travels through Cambodia included stays in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Inspiration came from local iconography such as art, dance, costumes, temples, ruins and Angkor Wat.  They are celebrated through mixed media collage and acrylic paintings that accompany my photography.  Tickets, coins, brochures, maps and other items collected throughout Cambodia, Hong Kong and Thailand also enrich the pages of this scrapbook.

I hope that this sketchbook can inspire others in their travel journaling and scrapbooking ideas.
